Checklist for Buying a Web Template

When purchasing a web template or element there are many things to consider. Below is a quick list to help you figure out what you want and need when purchasing your web template.
Template Search Features

You don’t want to be wasting all day just looking for a template. Look for template sites with excellent search features. Search by keyword, category, type, style, author, price range, and template id. The more search options the better, find what you want quickly and easily. If they do not provide a favorites or lightbox save option, make sure you can find your template again by recording the template id.

Template Variety

Many web template sites will get into one type of template category or style. If you like the style, it may benefit you. However, most Internet users don’t like to see similar designs on many partnership or networked sites. It will be to your advantage to seek a template site that sells templates from many different authors with different taste and styles. This way your websites can come across as professional, innovative, and unique.

Unique or Non-Unique

Unique templates are generally sold only once at a higher price, to one buyer insuring you that no other website will have the same design. Some template sites will sell non-unique templates at unique prices, allowing no future purchases of the template. It would be in your best interest to purchase a unique template only with 0 downloads, this way the unique price will reflect what you are purchasing. Non-unique templates are sold many times to many buyers, for a low price. Not all template sites sell both unique and non-unique templates, so depending on what you are looking for, you’ll want to pick a template site that can accommodate your purchasing needs.

Contact & Support Options

Make sure there are valid ways to contact support. Most commonly websites only provide e-mail contact options, but some will also provide online chat and telephone. Try to contact them before purchasing a template so that you can see how long it will take for them to respond. Sometimes if you need a project done quickly and you run into a problem, you’ll want to make sure support will be there to answer your questions.

Help Documents

If you are not familiar with using templates yet, online FAQ’s and help documents will certainly be a good place to get help. Not all template sites are created equal in this area. Check out what type of help documents they provide before making a template purchase. Make sure they give you step-by-step instructions on what needs to get done to open and edit your template. Don’t forget to check out their contact & support options as mentioned above, incase you need additional help.

Downloadable formats

Before you make that template purchase, make sure you double check what formats the template will be provided in. Will it open only in certain software such as Adobe Photoshop or what will you need to unzip it? Each template site may distribute their templates in different formats, so be sure to double check what software will be required to open and use their templates.
